We’re one of Florida’s oldest and largest not-for-profit health plans, providing Medicare Advantage coverage in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, Individual and Family coverage in numerous counties including Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, and coverage for Employer Groups in 52 counties across the state.
What is a Controller?
The Controller is a key member of the Finance Team, responsible and accountable for leading all accounting operations for AvMed. The position leads the monthly financial close, including processing of financial transactions in line with generally accepted accounting principles, reporting and analyzing financial and operational results, and account reconciliation & analysis. Further responsible for ensuring key financial controls over financial reporting are in place and working as intended, setting the strategic direction for financial systems, chart of account maintenance, and commissions operations.
Schedule and Shift:
Shift: Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 5:30pm
This will be a hybrid position (3 days onsite and 2 remote).
Responsibility:
- The Controller is responsible for SantaFe HealthCare, Inc. (including SantaFe Management Services LLC), SantaFe Senior Living, Inc. and SFHC on a Consolidated basis, which includes consolidation accounting, including the billing, reconcilement, and elimination of all intercompany transactions for SFHC & Affiliates.
- Responsible for the preparation of monthly and quarterly internal financial statements and supplementary reports for management and the Board of Directors.
- Oversees the resolution of all GAAP accounting issues, including research, documentation and implementation of new accounting pronouncements and requirements. Coordinates the annual external audit for AvMed. Oversees the timely and accurate issuance of audited GAAP financial statements for AvMed.
- Responsible for the completion, in accordance with SAP, of all premium, membership, utilization, reinsurance and medical claims related pages of the quarterly and annual statements submitted to the State of Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) and to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
- Sets the strategic direction and establishes a positive, customer service-oriented culture within the department. Directs the work activities of staff in the department; works with Human Resources to recruit, interview, select, and hire associates; coaches, mentors and develops staff including developing employee onboarding and career development plans; outlines specific performance metrics for the department and provides ongoing constructive feedback.
- Directs the development and maintenance of systems and processes necessary for the monthly calculation and timely payment of all external, and internal, broker/agent compensation, for all AvMed lines of business.
- Recommends and 10% implements systems necessary to support the administration of selling expenses, as well as collaborating with Sales and IT to make system changes required to accommodate commission/bonus program changes as set forth by Sales and Marketing. Provides budget and forecast amounts across all selling expense categories as required.
- Oversees financial accounting, reconciling and reporting for all non-standard provider and partner relationships, including captivated arrangements, value-based arrangements and other partner relationships.
- Collaborating with Network and Health Care Economics in the development and maintenance of systems and processes to capture, record and reconcile premium, medical, and other costs associated with member populations included in each arrangement, and to report financial results internally and externally as contractually agreed upon.
- Manages all pharmacy and pharmacy-related accounting, including pharmacy claim costs, pharmacy rebates and all of the activity related to the Medicare Advantage Part D program.
- Oversees all Finance-related operational functions related to AvMed’s self-funded line of business, including but not limited to: 1) capture and full reconcilement of all funds distributed on behalf of, and collected from, each group on a weekly and monthly basis; 2) accurate accounting for all self-funded business activities in accordance with GAAP; 3) development of budgets and forecasts for each group in collaboration with Underwriting and FP&A; and 6 reporting actuals against budget for each group.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum Education – Bachelor's
- Majors in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or a related field required.
- 6-10 years of experience
- Progressively responsible experiences in accounting required, with a minimum of five years in a leadership role; proven track record within a managed care /health care environment and accounting experience with multiple, discrete lines-of-business preferred.
- Certified Public Accountant license preferred
- Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant preferred
- They must have excellent knowledge of GAAP.
